They say once you tell someone else about a goal, you're more likely to achieve it -- so hi interweb (!!), here's my May goal! With some inspo from my good friend Rachel (check her out on IG @asiancarabelli !), I'm joining in on the 5:30 for 30 day challenge! And if I'm lucky, maybe I'll be able to keep it going past thirty days! But let's be real -- if you know me, you know that my spirit pokémon is snorlax, I'm rarely awake before 10AM if not required and you're probably already questioning if I'll be able to make it past two days, let alone thirty. But also if you know me, you'll know that a long time dream of mine is to be a morning person -- you know, the kind of person that walks around wide-eyed, is able to answer questions in full sentences and doesn't growl at people when they are spoken to -- all before 8AM!

Today was a success that will go down in h i s t o r y -- woke up at 5:30 (AM to clarify for those doubters), went to yoga with Becca as my witness, ate BREAKFAST OMG and have yet to nap with no plan in sight!! Needless to say, coffee will become one of my best friends over the next month and I'm totally alright with that.

In other news, I signed up for the Detroit Free Press Marathon next October and I'm trying to convince my classmates to join me! So far, I think I've tricked at least five people to pay money for the self-inflicted torture also known as long-distance running...hehe I'm only kidding but shout-out to Becca, Trusha, Carmen, Vivian and Kirk for signing up so far! Another great reason to wake up at 5:30 is to get a morning ten miler in before class ;)

Lastly, if you have any advice for a meager morning amateur, please tell cause we all know I'm going to need all the help and motivation I can get with this one.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Are you a new dog owner and excited to hit the trails and campgrounds? Or maybe you've had a pup for awhile, but haven't had the courage to venture out into the wilderness with them yet? Understandable! Camping with your furry friend can bring along some hounding worries, but if you remember the basics, you're bound to have a pawfect camping trip in the great outdoors!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. Plan ahead

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Read up on the campsite and trails to ensure dog-friendliness. You'll be surprised how many national parks do not allow dogs on their trails -_- Fortunately though, most state parks and national forests are extremely dog friendly! So just make sure to plan a little bit before hitting the road.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here's a short list of the National Parks that would love to see your furry friend:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Acadia --- Coast of Maine: if you can make it up here, it's a dog's dream!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Cuyahoga Valley --- Northern Ohio

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Congaree National Park --- South Carolina: free park to explore with your furry friend, lots of great trails

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Grand Canyon --- Arizona: dogs only allowed above rim of canyon and cannot hike down into the canyon, although a kennel service is offered near the South Rim Trail

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mammoth Cave --- Kentucky: pets are not allowed in the caves, but can hike on the above-ground trails available

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">North Cascades --- Washington State: dogs allowed on some parts of the Pacific Crest Trail

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Shenandoah --- Virginia: 480 miles of dog-friendly trails and campgrounds for your pup!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yosemite --- California: unfortunately dogs are only allowed on the Wawona Meadow Loop trail and some campgrounds

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2. Gear up!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> You'll be packing for two, now! Depending on the season, your pup will have different needs, but here are some of the essentials as well as some of the fun things Kiba likes to bring on our trips ♡
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Essentials: check cord for campsite (recommend 15" or 20" -- can always shorten), water-resistant leash, designated UL water bottle, collapsible bowl(s), lightweight food, more treats and water than you'll think you'll need, doggie pack, tweezers (for ticks, thorns, etc), first aid kit, health history/updated vaccinations list
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Extras: bandana (for style, obvi), puppy sleeping bag and pad if they're spoiled, extra blankets, towels, more treats, harness, GPS tracking collar (especially important if your pup is an escape artist!), whistle

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> *Also note* camping requires more calories for both you and your furry friend, so make sure to pack more food than normal! Kiba is also an anxious eater and doesn't eat his kibble as regularly when we travel, so I pack fancy powerbar meals (his favorite) and more treats to make sure he's still getting enough energy

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3. Keep up the 'leave no trace' mentality for your pooch

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> This is especially important for dog food and doo-doo! You won't want to attract any unwelcome creatures, like bears, foxes, wolves, oh my!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4. The journey: mark the map for dog parks along the way!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Depending how long your journey will be, ensure to take plenty of rest stops and if possible make some stops at dog parks along the way! Kiba always needs the breaks to stretch his legs, drink water and get a little jog in -- and *bonus* it helps him maintain his cool, calm and collected attitude during the car ride

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">5. Give your pup a tour of the campground

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> If your dog is a dog, then they'll want to sniff up the whole campground. It's good to let them know where they can roam and also make sure they know the boundaries of your own campground. When starting a fire, make sure to teach them early on the fire pit is off limits. Kiba loves to search for food remnants near the fire ring, so we had to train him early on to be more careful (here's where the extra treats come in handy!). Alternatively, you can also tie their check cord/leash far enough away so they cannot reach the fire pit/cooking area, but Kiba sometimes feels excluded <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">(re: whines and whimpers) if he can't sit around the fire with me.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">6. Keep an eye on your pup at all times

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Over the years, I've learned that Kiba is a fox-magnet. Literally. The first encounter happened when we were staying at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park in Canada late June one year. I had my back turned as I was setting up the tent, still daylight, and turned around to witness a stare-down between Kiba and a red fox about 15 feet away (even though the campsite was full and there were people walking everywhere). The fox ran away when I started walking toward it, but who knows what could have gone down. Maybe they would have been great friends! Anywho, make sure you're looking out for wildlife around your pup because anything can happen

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">7. Tent for Two

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> I've never let Kiba sleep outside of our tent and I'd never advise anyone to risk it. Besides the danger of wildlife, it gets cold at night! I know, I know, huskies are tough and all, but Kiba is domesticated and honestly a bit spoiled. I always bring extra blankets for him to sleep on and he curls up at my feet to help keep me warm too! It's a win-win

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">8. Rain or shine, fun don't stop

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Always prepare for rain! Make sure your leash is water-resistant/proof. Kiba and I made his leash out of climbing rope, which is the most durable thing around! **Also, always bring extra towels**

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">9. Be prepared for the worst case scenario.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Consider looking into those high-tech GPS tracking collars if your pup is an escape artist. I personally don't have one, but I go to the ends of the earth to make sure Kiba is safely hooked to my hip (literally made a leash that goes around my waist for hiking). Also ensure you have a puppy first aid kit, check where the nearest vet is, bring his ID info, vaccinations list and health history. Lastly, make sure your contact information is attached somewhere to your pup in case the worst happens!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Hope you enjoyed our camping tips and feel free to ask any questions -- we've probably been there :)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Welcome to my little ol' blog, a place where I'm going to share some of my most intimate and profound thoughts....which will mostly be about desserts and dog toys, let's face it. But here's a smidgen about myself..

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I was born in Newport Beach, California, but my family only lived there for a few years after I was born before moving halfway across the country to the North Star State, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, my home, Minnesota. Although orange county remains one of my favorite places -- I mean when there's sunshine, tacos, the pacific, In n Out and most of my family -- what more does a girl need? I have three brothers and our old man did a pretty swell job of raising us considering he was playing mom and dad, including teaching us how to ice skate, build proper snow forts (which is pretty impressive for a Californian dad tbh) as well as bequeathing us with the ability to make perfect rice without using a rice cooker. He also taught us to be die-hard Lakers fans though, so I guess LA never really leaves your blood. My brothers ended up all over the place -- one is in Virginia working as a nuclear submarine lieutenant, one is working in IT back home in Minnesota and my youngest brother just started high school at Huntington High, as my dad moved back to Orange County a few years ago. I lived in Minnesota throughout university, worked a bit after graduating, traveled a lot in the past few years and last year I made the move to Michigan for medical school, and poof -- here I am!

And eventually, who knows, maybe we'll both figure me out as this little introspective blog-ourney continues! ;)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For the past six hours, I've been binge watching This is Us and if you haven't met the Pearson's yet, please stop wasting your time reading my blog and go watch! Out of the six hours I was watching, I was crying for three of those hours and had to pause several times because I couldn't even see the screen through my waterworks. Convinced yet? Would you believe me if I told you I wasn't a 'crier' until this show...? Convinced now???? Okay -- how about if I told you Milo Ventimiglia is one of the leading roles? Yep, knew I'd get you with that one ;)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> Anyway, I wanted to give a little intro to my meager blog. First off, hello and welcome! Starting out quite sparse, as you can see, but I want my you, my readers, to tell me what to write about! (I know, talk about me and my ultimate lazy brain!) But really, if there's something you would like to know about me or Kiba, post a comment and I'll make make it happen, just like that! If you want to hear about the time I was lost in Hong Kong, I'll write about it! Or maybe you want to know how I broke my elbow for the first time. Or the second time, even! Then there's that time my house was on fire, oofda... If you'd like to know my secret lasagna recipe or my Great Grandma Tootie's rice pudding recipe that's been passed down for generations, I'll even talk about that! (although don't expect all of the secret ingredients, I mean come on...) Or we can get a little deeper and if you'd like to know about the deaths, the people I've lost and the trials in my life -- I'll talk about those too. I can tell you about each time my heart's been broken, but also each time it's felt so full I thought it might burst into a thousand blissful pieces. If you want to get little more simple, you can ask about all the random jobs that have filled my life, like working as a bridal consultant, a waitress, or a high school English teacher. If you want to hear more exciting things, ask about my life in Kupang or my cross-country road trips with Kiba! As of this year, we've officially driven to both coasts and explored lots of places in between!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> To be honest, most of my posts will likely revolve around my one true love, Kiba. So if you like to read about cute huskies, you're in the right place! I'm also lacking in the memory department, so I'm hoping this will be something I can look back on when my memory starts to fade...probably in a few years time. Anywho, welcome and enjoy!
